Live It! (June 2009)
Magnificent Moldova
This year’s Mom and Me 2009 provided activities for 903 mothers and daughters from across Virginia to experience the culture of Moldova through games, crafts, PrayerWalking, and missionary visits.
Dressed in a Hungarian costume, Tammy Stocks, a missionary to the Roma people in Hungary (there are very few missionaries living in Moldova because of the extreme impoverished economic climate), shared about her missions work with the Roma (gypsies), also a large population in Moldova. Tammy Stocks participated in Girls in Action as a child and contributes her experiences in GA in assisting her in her journey toward missionary service.
Anteal Gargiulo, a missionary volunteer, shared about her experiences in Moldova through Project Ruth, which offers education, humanitarian assistance, and the salvation of Jesus Christ to the Roma people.
The Mom and Me camp offers mothers and daughters the opportunity to participate in missions projects related to the weekend theme. The participants were generous in contributing an offering of $2576.28 to support Project Ruth, ministering to the Roma people of Romania and Moldova. The Missions Project supported Standing Rock Reservation, on the North/South Dakota border, with an abundance of backpacks, and new socks and underwear for the children. Judy Hetherington, Roanoke Valley Baptist Association Coordinator for Standing Rock Reservation, shared about the Lakota and Dakota people and ministries occurring at Standing Rock.
Charlotte Wilmouth was recognized as the Outstanding GA 2009. Charlotte is a 5th grader at Bon Air Baptist Church in the Richmond Association. Charlotte was selected as the Outstanding GA because of her exceptional and exemplary leadership, and missions involvement in her church and community.
One WMUV objective is to provide leadership opportunities for women and girls. CrossRoads Ambassadors Kathryn Eckler (6th grader) and Victoria Fitzgerald (8th grader) assisted in leading the music during the opening and closing programs, and performed a skit about their camp memories. The CrossRoads Ambassadors program encourages leadership and promotes camping awareness for the WMUV CrossRoads Camp and Conference Center in Lowesville.
The Mom’s Class focused on writing words of encouragement and love for their children through love notes that are included in their lunchboxes everyday. The class was based on the book, Love Notes in Lunchboxes, by Linda J. Gilden. The Moms were led through exercises in writing notes and left with a handful of notes ready for the lunchboxes the following week.
Sunflowers are abundant in Moldova, which inspired the scripture verse for the weekend: Keep your eyes on the LORD! You will shine like the sun. Psalm 34:5.
Next year Mom and Me Camp will be held at Eagle Eyrie on April 23-25, 2010. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend this meaningful and fun-filled mother-daughter weekend.
