I attended a group meeting within two weeks of moving from Nevada where I had been trained to lead Baptist Young Women conferences. Contrary to my perception that VA WMU would not need me and I would be able to "chill out" for awhile, I was incorporated into the ongoing work. When we moved to Nashville, TN in 1994, I was serving as Recording Secretary of VA WMU. I am continually grateful to the women of VA who mentored me. Every lesson and experience I learned while serving among you is being put to good use as I serve as the Executive Director-Treasurer of Tennessee Woman's Missionary Union:)

It only took a couple of days for Baptist Women to track me down in 1983 when I moved to Annandale, Virginia. On Thursday, September 23rd, I sat in my Capital Punishment class with nearly 12 or so other students. We were watching the film based on Sister Helen Prejean's "Dead Man Walking". I thought of Teresa, of her family, and of the victims. Tears filled my eyes over the fact that I was in class, intellectualizing on the death penalty in the United States and in less than five hours, this woman would be killed by the State.
Even though my decision to stand against capital punishment is not directly related to my spiritual beliefs, two scriptures came to mind as I thought about Teresa's death sentence. I post them here in hopes they may serve as an affirmation or comfort to Lynn and any other readers who find themselves here.
"To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;" Daniel 9:9
"I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
for you saw my affliction
and knew the anguish of my soul.
You have not handed me over to the enemy
but have set my feet in a spacious place" -Psalm 31:7-8

May it be a deep desire of our hearts that we come to know and fully understand the gift of mercy.

On Thursday, September 23rd, I sat in my Capital Punishment class with nearly 12 or so other students. We pray also for the families and friends of Teresa Lewis, Julian Lewis and Charles Lewis in their loss. May God wrap all who were touched by this execution in divine loving care. Thank you Laura for your ministry among us, it bears much fruit for the Lord.

In loving and faithful support we pray for Lynn, Julie, the WMUV and all who reminded us through this tragic event that God redeems all who call upon God. I do not like the idea of death penalty. I wish I could have met Teresa in prison. I know that we (Teresa and I) will meet into God's kingdom someday soon. Jesus is coming very soon so it won't be too much longer when Jesus, all of his children including Teresa and myself will get together and live in love and peace forever into Heaven someday soon.

I became a Christian on June 10 2000. Sometime we put our 'head in the sand' to avoid this kind of examination of our real feelings. The passion and love that has been shown for all involved has caused me to spend time in deep prayer. I thank God for the strength that will be given to each of you on the 23rd. Stand firm!!

There will come good out of this…for one thing, this has caused many of us to do some heart and soul searching! Since I am also an American and participate in this Government of ‚ÄúWe The People‚Äù I believe it is my responsibility to stand and declare that the death penalty should be repealed. My suggestion is that it be repealed in favor of life in imprisonment.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:15-17

As a Christian, I am expressly against the putting to death of any human being, even for the most heinous crimes.
