Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia is pleased to announce the recommendation by the Board of Trustees of Dr. Valerie Carter as Executive Director/Treasurer of WMUV.
Dr. Carter’s calling is to inspire, equip, and mobilize Christ followers to be on mission for Christ locally and globally. She has lived out this call working with Virginia Baptists in various ways since 1988. Valerie served for ten years as Director of the Hillside Baptist Center in Richmond, as Associate of Christian Social Ministries at WMUV for five years, and for the past ten years as Associate Pastor for Glocal Ministries at the Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond.
She earned a BA in Sociology from Adelphi University, the Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University School of Theology, the Master of Science in Sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Valerie currently serves as Adjunct Instructor of Sociology at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College.
Valerie is a native of Long Island, New York, the widow of Rev. Hylan Carter, Jr. and mother of two sons. She is a member at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, where she was licensed and ordained to the gospel ministry. She is a member of the Association of Black Sociologists, a Trustee of Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and most recently committed to serve as a board member with Fresh Expressions.
As Associate of Christian Social Ministries for WMUV, Dr. Carter developed Hope Builders/Christian Women’s Job Corps sites throughout Virginia. She has led numerous conferences and training events, and is a gifted speaker and writer.
Her gifts, education, training, and experiences prepare her well to lead WMUV in our effort to inspire and equip women to be radically involved in the world for Christ. Her high energy, vision for outreach and passion for ministry will lead in the motivation of WMUV members and others to be on mission with God at home and around the world!
The recommendation to elect Dr. Valerie Carter as Executive Director/Treasurer of Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia will be presented to a called meeting of WMUV on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Tabor Baptist Church located at 2011Fairmount Avenue, Richmond, VA. Following the election there will be an installation service and a time of commitment and celebration as we together give thanks for the ministry of WMUV and anticipate a bright future in the midst of changing times.
